Why “Legal” and “Blocked” Are Not Contradictory
Local law and Polymarket’s own access policy answer different questions. A platform can choose or be required to block a jurisdiction without that policy establishing a criminal offence for every individual who would otherwise use it.
In Great Britain, the relevant rules primarily regulate the operator offering gambling services to consumers. We found no specific prohibition criminalising ordinary individual access to Polymarket, while the operator still needs an appropriate gambling licence to serve Great Britain.
Can you use Polymarket in the United Kingdom?
No. Polymarket’s current restriction list names GB / United Kingdom as a fully blocked country. Its policy also says that using a VPN or similar tool to bypass the restriction violates its terms. UK market data may be visible online, but that is not permission to open, fund or trade an account from the UK.
Is Polymarket legal for UK residents?
For ordinary users, we classify it as Legal. We found no official statement making ordinary individual use of Polymarket or a comparable prediction market a standalone criminal offence. This conclusion concerns the user; it is not an approval of Polymarket as a UK service.
For operators, the position is different. England, Scotland and Wales are covered by Great Britain’s gambling framework, under which qualifying commercial prediction-market products require appropriate licensing. Northern Ireland has separate gambling legislation, so it should not be treated as identical without separate verification.
Who regulates prediction markets?
The Gambling Commission is the main practical authority where a product is gambling. The Gambling Act 2005 and the Commission’s remote-sector guidance focus on providers offering gambling facilities to consumers in Great Britain. The FCA matters for the crypto and financial-services perimeter, but neither regulator’s role means Polymarket has been individually approved for UK users.
Crypto rules and GBP in the UK
Buying, holding and transferring crypto is not banned for UK individuals. The FCA requires relevant UK cryptoasset exchange and custody businesses to meet the anti-money-laundering registration regime; registration is not an endorsement or a guarantee of customer protection. For normal crypto activity, GBP bank-transfer rails and cards are offered by several established exchanges, but provider eligibility, KYC and bank controls vary.

Eligibility: Do not use a VPN, location-spoofing tool or any other workaround. This page does not provide an access route for a blocked UK account.
For a user who already holds crypto outside Polymarket, the ordinary GBP cash-out pattern is crypto wallet or provider → a UK-available exchange/off-ramp → GBP bank account, subject to that provider’s checks. This is general crypto plumbing, not a Polymarket withdrawal route for a UK account. Keep transaction, wallet and GBP records.
Polymarket taxes in the UK
There is no dedicated UK “Polymarket tax” rule. GOV.UK lists betting, lottery and pools winnings among items not subject to Capital Gains Tax, but that statement does not settle every prediction-market fact pattern. Do not assume an account result has a universal tax treatment.
The clearer point is the crypto leg: HMRC says token dealing by an individual will normally be investment activity, and a disposal can create a Capital Gains Tax question. Converting a stablecoin or other crypto into GBP may therefore need records of dates, amounts, fees and sterling values. Frequent or business-like activity can require a different analysis.
| Situation | Likely treatment |
|---|---|
| Prediction-market result | No dedicated rule found; do not assume a classification. |
| Crypto-to-GBP conversion | HMRC CGT rules may apply to a disposal. |
| Records | Keep exchange, wallet, fees and GBP-value records. |
What is different for UK users?
- Platform block first: GBP on-ramps are relatively familiar, but they cannot make Polymarket available in the UK.
- Regulatory distinction: UK rules concentrate heavily on whether an operator may offer gambling to British consumers; that is not the same question as an individual customer’s criminal liability.
- GBP off-ramp maturity: UK crypto users can often use bank-transfer providers, but KYC, source-of-funds and tax records are normal friction rather than an afterthought.

FAQ
Is Polymarket available in the UK?
No. Polymarket lists the United Kingdom as fully blocked for access and trading.
Is Polymarket legal in the UK?
Great Britain is best described as restricted: products that meet the gambling definition require licensed, regulated provision. That is separate from Polymarket’s own block.
Is Polymarket regulated in the UK?
Do not treat Polymarket as UK-approved. The Gambling Commission regulates qualifying gambling products and operators serving Great Britain.
Can I deposit GBP on Polymarket?
Not as a compliant UK route. GBP or crypto funding does not override Polymarket’s UK restriction.
How can I withdraw Polymarket money in the UK?
This guide does not present a withdrawal route for a blocked UK Polymarket account. For ordinary crypto holdings, a UK-available exchange or off-ramp may convert crypto to GBP subject to its checks.
Do I pay tax on Polymarket profits in the UK?
There is no dedicated rule for Polymarket. Crypto disposals can raise Capital Gains Tax questions, so retain complete records.
Bottom line
Polymarket is currently not a usable product from the UK. The important distinction is not “crypto is legal, therefore Polymarket works”: UK residents may use crypto subject to normal rules, while Polymarket separately blocks the jurisdiction and UK prediction-market products sit in a regulated gambling area.
